Troup Bywaters + Anders is one of the UK’s leading M & E firms with a 50 year history and a strong reputation for design and technical consultancy across a wide range of markets.

Operating as a building services engineers partnership, the firm works nationwide and across the commercial, retail, public, education, leisure, residential, defence and historic sectors as well as through numerous framework agreements. It has around 200 staff and offices including London, Leeds, Manchester, Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow and Edinburgh and works on public and private design projects, which include new build, refurbishment and fit-out. The firm has expanded its Cardiff office and in recent years has moved to new offices in Edinburgh and Manchester. Meanwhile TB+A has moved to new office space in Belfast, where it has had a presence for some 10 years. 

Core services including building services; construction expert services; IT & security solutions; light & lighting solutions; services management and energy and and environment solutions. It also offers various niche solutions. As well as its network of UK offices, the company has a presence across Europe through the MERGE network of European engineers. The firm also provides a whole life service, advising on planning, operation, construction and management of properties.

TB+A has a series of blue chip client clients including Marks & Spencer and Google. It supplied the M& E services – and the lighting – for Google’s offices in Victoria. Major notable commercial projects where the firm has worked include PZ Cussons’ new hq in Manchester and a new building for SJ Berwin in the City and at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. The firm has also worked on Deloitte’s London campus development strategy. TB+A also has framework agreements with RBS, Oracle, Skanska, HM Prison Service, Selfridges and Co., ICL Framework and Marks & Spencer.

In late summer 2020, TB+A was appointed as a professional services supplier to the Procure Partnerships Framework for all public sector works in a series of UK regions including: Yorkshire, North East, East of England, East Midlands, South Wales and the South West. The framework will run over four years

Meanwhile, in March 2021, the company set up a ‘strategic consultancy partnership’ with Jersey-based multi-disciplinary engineers Hartigan to provide services to the construction industry across the Channel Islands.

Under managing partner Peter Anderson, TB+A puts a strong emphasis on training and development and the company was recognised as ‘SME Employer of the Year’ in the National Apprenticeship Awards Final 2020.

Meanwhile, TBA worked on the McKinsey & Company project which recently won best ‘Fit Out of Workplace’ at the London Regional BCO Virtual Awards 2020. In early 2021, the company set a target to achieve net zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2030.

According to a league table of consultants compiled by Building magazine, TB+A ranked 56th in a survey of all building-related consultants with a fee income in 2013/14 of £12.3 million. Turnover figures for the partnership are not readily available. The accounts for Troup Bywaters + Anders Ltd. are those of a dormant company which is not trading and effectively reports no turnover. A statement to Companies House in July 2020 confirmed all information required by the registrar had been delivered by the company.

Data from Glenigan point to a healthy flow of M & E work at TB + A across the country in early 2021. They show that the firm is a consultant on the £25.6 million Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence at Guy’s Hospital in London where detailed plans have been submitted and work is set to start in autumn 2021 and run for 18 months (Project ID: 20447816). Glenigan data also shows that TB+A is the M&E consultant on a £4 million extension of King James School in Huddersfield where detailed plans have been granted and work is set to start in autumn 2021 and continue for five months (Project ID: 19090649).

TB +A is one of the major players in the UK mechanical and electrical sector. The group’s innovative work on landmark projects such as Papworth Hospital and for key clients such as Deloitte have reinforced its reputation in the sector. Meanwhile, its specialist knowledge of sectors such as retail banking have helped foster close links with blue chip clients. Meanwhile, TB+A’s wide spread of national offices, its links with Europe and its strong portfolio of framework contracts should ensure that it remains a significant force in the sector.
